ANNOUNCEMENT: Avon Gorge Cruises on The Matthew

Urgent repair works are currently taking place on the outer lock gate at the entrance to the Cumberland Basin. These repair works were originally expected to take four weeks during July 2025. Unfortunately, however, the repair period has been extended to at least the end of September, but possibly until the end of the year.

Sadly, this means that The Matthew is unable to run the Avon Gorge Cruise as planned for the rest of this year, as the use of the lock is restricted while the works are ongoing. All ticket holders have been informed.

We are sorry for the disappointment to all of our customers affected by this situation, and we are absolutely gutted ourselves as the Avon Gorge Cruise is an important part of our summer activities. We are looking forward to running the trip again in 2026 – the first batch of dates will be announced around Feb/Mar 2026.

All other 2025 trips are unaffected, so please check the timetable on our main booking page for Harbour Trips and Fish & Chips Trips!

    The Matthew Story

The Matthew that you see in Bristol today is a modern reconstruction of the original Matthew that John Cabot sailed to Newfoundland in 1497.

The Matthew 525 Project

To mark 25 years of The Matthew and the 525th anniversary of John Cabot’s voyage across the Atlantic on the original Matthew in 1497, The Matthew of Bristol Trust embarked on a project to further advance the educational aims of the ship and the Trust.

The Matthew 525 Project is now completed and The Trust is absolutely delighted to share with you a fantastic new learning resource and a brand new documentary telling the story of The Matthew from the 1990s to the present day.

Supporting The Matthew!

A beautiful ship like The Matthew requires a lot of looking after to keep it in tip-top condition and able to sail.

As The Matthew of Bristol Trust doesn’t receive any public or private funding, we rely hugely on the generosity of the general public to help us keep the ship afloat!

All money raised by charity is used to maintain The Matthew so that you can continue to visit it, sail on it and learn about its rich history.

Your support is appreciated.
